The South Indian filter coffee uses the same system for ages. You have a decoction holder at the bottom and a filter holder at the top. Put a heapful of coffee powder at the top, press it in and then pour the hot water.
Within a few minutes you have expresso decoction collecting at the bottom. This is then used to make the south indian style filter coffee.
The filter is a simple system and most commonly made in stainless steel. You may find brass ones too. And these cost on average two or three dollars.
But...the most important thing as a coffreak, I am glad you are enjoying your coffee!!
Have fun.

cheers
