Carrie,

My first thought is to check permissions on the file and directory. Also make sure your init file is named with the format initSID.ora where SID is your instance name. The instance name will be case sensitive in UNIX/Linux, so keep that in mind.

Hopefully that will get you through. If you can give a little more detail I can try to help more.

Good luck.

You can actually name a pfile whatever you want (within the restrictions of your operating system) or even keep it in another location on the system, but be warned: if the pfile is not in the standard location with the standard name you will have to tell Oracle where to find it every time you start up the instance.

The file is only read at startup so after that it does not matter where it is.

If you want to you can link the file to another location on the system but this can cause confusion if you're not careful.

Hope this helps.
